The Challenge

The customer was evaluating new versus refurbished Canon FPA-3000 i-Line steppers for a new high-volume compound-semi line. New tools carried high pricing and a lead time of over a year per tool. The customer needed five systems reconfigured for new materials and tighter process tolerances — but couldn't take delivery of all five at once. Capital spending plans and floor space for capacity had to be phased in over roughly a year and a half. Wafer substrate was sapphire, and customer wafers varied widely in bow curvature, adding to the technical complexity of the reconfiguration.

The Solution

GCE offered a full turnkey solution: sourcing five suitable Canon FPA-3000 systems from its own inventory, then performing full refurbishment, reconfiguration, installation, training, and warranty coverage on each one. Because GCE held the systems in inventory rather than on backorder, deliveries could be timed to the customer's capital plan and floor readiness — each tool delivered in three months rather than queued behind a year-long new-tool lead time, with the full five-system rollout phased over roughly 18 months.

GCE’s Involvement

GCE's differentiator was inventory depth — having suitable Canon FPA-3000 systems already on hand meant the customer could pull tools onto their own schedule instead of committing to a rigid delivery date up front. As each system arrived, GCE's field engineers handled installation and on-site requalification, calibrating the reconfigured optics and wafer-handling systems to the sapphire substrate's bow-curvature range before releasing each tool to production.

Results

GCE delivered all five Canon FPA-3000 systems across the agreed 18-month rollout, each arriving within three months of order — well inside the customer's capital and floor-readiness schedule. The phased approach let the customer bring capacity online incrementally, avoiding both the cost of absorbing five tools at once and the year-plus lead time a new tool would have required for each unit.
